NOTA Scotland and the Forensic Network look forward to welcoming David Wilson-Wynne,Senior Dementia Consultant, Dementia Service Development Centre – University of Stirling.
The presentation will provide an evidence-informed overview of dementia, exploring the different types of dementia and how they can present uniquely in each individual. It highlights the importance of effective communication and examines how changes in understanding and expression can shape everyday interactions.
The presentation also considers the impact of terminology, challenging commonly used language in dementia care and reflecting on how words influence attitudes, identity and practice. Drawing on current dementia research, it connects emerging evidence with real-world care.
The role of the environment is explored as an active part of care, demonstrating how design and sensory considerations can support wellbeing, independence and confidence.
The presentation introduces a person-led approach to dementia care, encouraging a shift from traditional models towards practices that recognise the individual’s agency, rights and lived experience.
